Why CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture connects farmers and members of the community with fresh, local produce. CSAs support small-scale farmers and help strengthen the local food system.

As a member, you will be part of the exciting sustainable food movement that celebrates fresh, local produce. You will also learn new recipes from Urban Roots staff and eat with the Central Texas seasons. Urban Roots will benefit by receiving upfront or steady income from members, decreasing some risks that come with small-scale farming.

The CSA will also help fund the Urban Roots youth program, which uses sustainable agriculture as a means to transform the lives of young people as they increase the access of healthy food in Austin. Urban Roots engages young people to learn about hard work, to connect with the land and to serve their community.

How does it work?

Each week you will pick up your bag of produce from your designated pick-up site. To evenly distribute the produce throughout the week, we have designated a certain number of shares to be available at each site listed below:

  • Austin Farmers’ Market Downtown on Saturdays; 9am-1pm
  • Urban Roots Farm (7651 Delwau Ln.); Saturdays 10am – 2pm
  • Center 61 (MLK & Airport); Wednesdays 4-6pm

* Note that you must commit to one pick-up site for the entire season. Please select your site when you sign up below.

Your share will consist of a variety of vegetables and herbs grown on the Urban Roots farm and will change on a weekly basis. One share will supply a family of 2-4 fresh produce for a week, depending on your eating habits.

The produce includes a variety of basil, beet, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, cilantro, cucumber, eggplant, fig, green bean, leek, melon, onion, pepper, potato, radish, squash, tomato, turnip and an assortment of leafy greens.

In addition to the produce, you will receive a weekly e-newsletter with stories from the farm, seasonal recipes and a cooking class with new recipes for your produce!

Each week you will receive your produce in an Urban Roots cloth bag at the farmers’ market. To reduce the number of bags needed, we ask that you return your bag the following week when you receive the next week’s bag full of produce.

What happens if I can’t pick up my share?

Any leftover shares will be donated to one of our local hunger relief partners. We donate 40% of the produce that we grow to local soup kitchens and food pantries. If you know that you will be unable to pick-up your share from the farmer’s market, let us know and we can donate your share to someone in need. You can also have a family member or friend pick up your share that week.

How much does it cost?

CSA shares are currently available for the 2012 season! Your share will last 17 weeks starting in April and ending in July. You have the option to sign up for a Full Share or a Half-Share. Each Full Share costs $40 per week for the entire season, totaling $680. Each Half-Share costs $40 every other week, and you would pick up a share of produce every other week from your designated pick-up site. Half-Shares are $40, every other week for a total of $340. Once the CSA begins, the price to join will be adjusted to account for the number of weeks left in the CSA. Please note there is a one time $5 bag fee added to the total cost of the CSA.

Our share cost is slightly higher than other local CSA models to be sensitive to other farmers and to not take away any of their potential customers. Urban Roots is a non-profit organization supported by grants and the generosity of many foundations, corporations, and individuals. We hope to attract CSA members who want to support the mission of Urban Roots and the youth that we serve. Your generous support helps to empower youth and serve the community. Youth that work with Urban Roots over the 25 week spring and summer season receive a paid stipend for their work.

Your CSA payment will be directly supporting the Urban Roots youth program. Because you will receive a service, you will not be able to deduct your entire CSA share membership as a tax-deductible donation. However, since we calculate the cost at $10 per week above the market rate, $170 is tax deductible for a full share and $85 for a half share. We will send you a letter documenting the tax-deductible portion.

What are the payment options?
